Iraqi memorizer Musa Akram Nuais attending the final round of Iran’s 41st International Quran Competition in Mashhad.

Reading and reflection on the verses of the Quran is necessary, and afterward, these verses should be applied in life, Musa Akram Nuais told IQNA on the sidelines of the competition.

He said he started learning the Quran by heart at the age of 8 in the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) in Karbala and managed to memorize the entire Holy Book at 13.

Asked about using new technology and innovations to memorize the Holy Quran, he said that naturally, memorizing the Quran requires listening to it and repeating it, which is how the memorization process begins.

“Of course, using new tools for memorization will be beneficial, but we still need experienced teachers to ensure that the Quran is memorized correctly.”

He also highlighted his family’s role in his memorization of the Quran, saying, “I grew up in a Quran-centered family. Three of my brothers are also Quran memorizers, and my mother has memorized the entire Quran as well. I memorized the Quran alongside them, and naturally, the environment in our family supports Quran memorization.”

He then about the famous Quran reciters and memorizers he has used as role models, saying, “I listen to the recitations of many reciters, but for example, I prefer the recitations of (late Egyptian qari) Master Minshawi. Among Iraqi reciters, I enjoy the recitations of Osama Al-Karbalayi, Maytham al-Tammar, and others.”

Nuais was also asked about the international Quran contest of Iran. He said it is well-known that the international Quran competitions in Iran are among the most prestigious in the world.

“Iran has been organizing these Quran competitions for over 40 years, paying great attention to the selection of participants and judges. The judging process and the performance of the participants are also carefully scrutinized.”

He went on to say that such competitions play a significant role in encouraging the younger generation to memorize the Quran and help them reach a high level in this field. “They also motivate them to aspire to the level of those who participate in these competitions.”

Quran reciters and memorizers from 144 countries took part in the preliminary round of Iran’s 41st International Holy Quran Competition and from among them, representatives of 27 countries have made it to the finals in the men and women sections.
