IQNA – With the arrival of the sorrowful days of Muharram, streets leading to the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS) in Karbala, Iraq, have begun seeing massive mourning rituals.

Muharram mourning rituals in Karbala

They include Bain-ul-Haramain, the area between the two holy mausoleums.

The chain-beating mourning groups, following an ancient tradition, visit the holy shrines to hold mourning ceremonies and keep alive the memory of the third Imam (AS) and his loyal companions.

These events, which are organized according to a coordinated and comprehensive plan by the Department of Rituals and Husseini Processions at the Astans (custodianships) of the two sacred shrines, will continue throughout the days of Muharram.

The mourning groups, following predetermined routes, first proceed toward the Bab al-Qiblah gate of the shrine of Hazrat Abbas (AS). After performing their ceremonies in the sacred courtyard, they move through the path between the two shrines to the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS), where they conclude their mourning rituals.

The Department of Rituals assigns special teams of personnel to accompany each procession from the moment it begins, managing and coordinating the movement of the groups to ensure the ceremonies are conducted with complete order and without interfering with the flow of pilgrims.
