Friday First Day of Muharram: Ayatollah Sistani

IQNA – The office of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani announced that Friday will be the first day of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram.

The Center for Astronomical Studies and Researches, affiliated to the office of the grand source of emulation, has predicted that the crescent moon will be observable after sunset on Thursday, al-Furat News reported.

Therefore, Friday, June 27, will be the first day of Muharram and the beginning of the new Hijri calendar year of 1447, the office said.

Accordingly, the Day of Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, falls on Sunday, July 6.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.
