IQNA – Millions of people traveled the holy city of Karbala, most of the on foot, to participate in the Arbaeen procession in August 2024.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s Arbaeen falls on August 25.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Pilgrims are welcomed by thousands of stations, called moukebs, which provide them with food, water, resting place and other services for free.
