The international mourning procession attended by over 350 pilgrims from different European, American, Asian, and African countries has started in Najaf and will culminate in Karbala on the day of Arbaeen (Monday, December 23), Al-Furat news agency reported.
They make up an international group of mourners headed by Sayyid Muhammad Saeed Al-Hakim.
Arbaeen marks the anniversary of the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 after Hijra (680 A.D.).
On this day, Shia Muslims around the world mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).
According to Iraqi officials, the holy city of Karbala is expected to host some 20 million mourning pilgrims on the day of Arbaeen this year.
