Tehran’s interim Friday prayers leader described the US-led coalition formed against the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) as hypocritical and deceitful.

Addressing Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran yesterday, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said the coalition pursues evil objectives.

“They (members of the coalition) have themselves given rise to these terrorist groups,” the senior cleric said.
“Their objective is to overthrow the legitimate government in Syria and undermine the independence and territorial integrity of Iraq,” he underlined.
Ayatollah Khatami also referred to the coalition’s attacks on sites in Iraq and Syria without these countries’ approval as acts of aggression according to international laws.
The United States and its allies have been conducting airstrikes against ISIL inside Syria since September 22 without authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.
Elsewhere in his Friday prayers sermon, Ayatollah Khatami underscored the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear rights and said nuclear negotiations between Iran and world powers should lead to the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Iran by the West.
Nuclear negotiators representing Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) held the latest round of talks on Tehran’s civilian nuclear program in New York from September 18 to September 26.
They are going to resume the talks later this month.
