Saffarzadeh who has translated the holy Quran into three languages is the first Iranian woman to win the title.
An award giving ceremony had been planned in Cairo to be attended by Al-Azhar University professors and religious luminaries from Muslim countries on Sunday; however she has asked to be excused from the ceremony due to receiving the invitation too late.
Tahereh Saffarzadeh was born in 1315 (1936) in the southern city of Sirjan, Kerman province. She graduated in English Literature from Tehran university and continued her education in literary criticism in the US.
