-- The Iranian Acting Foreign Minister believes Iran in the past 30 years has been evidence to prove close links between Quran’s religious principles and politics.
Hussein Sheikh al-Islam stressed that protecting the Dar al-Islam (House of Islam) is the primary principle of Iran’s foreign policy, and maintained, “We have succeeded in doing so protecting this base for the world of Islam”.
“After that, the main issue in Iran’s foreign policy is to invite non-Muslims to Islam. In many verses all through the Quran, God has ordered Muslims to invite the unbelievers to the right path and truthful religion in a peaceful manner before they start Jihad (holy war in the cause of Allah) against them, including:
‘Invite all to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious…’ (Sura al-Nahl: 125)”, Sheikh al-Islam added.
The political expert further added, “On the same premise, when an Islamic government undertakes administration of Muslim affairs, it is obligated to spread the global mission of the prophet of Islam (PBUH) to non-Muslims and invite them to Islam through common legitimate means”.
In the interactions among the Islamic government and foreign countries, he referred to an Islamic principle which says ‘the unbelievers have no way to prevail over the believers’ and said, “Islam has always emphasized the independence, dignity, and glory of Muslims and does not grant the unbelievers any hegemony and dominance over Muslims. This principle, therefore, is basic and governs any relationship of the Islamic government with non-Muslims and denies any dominance of the unbelievers over the Islamic countries. According to Surah an-Nisa, verse 141, “Those who lie in wait for you, if there is a victory for you from Allah, they say: ‘were we not with you?’, but if the faithless get a share [of victory], they say ‘did we not prevail upon you and defend you against the faithful?’ Allah will judge between you on the day of resurrection, and Allah will never provide the faithless any way to prevail over the faithful.”
He referred to the value of the efforts made to promote and propagate Islam considering this obligatory act as one of the foreign policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran; he then went on to name certain goals of Islam at the global level.
He enumerated two more principles of Iran’s foreign policy as Muslims’ freedom from obligation toward polytheists, and fidelity to the international obligations and added, “In numerous verses God calls Muslims to fulfill their international obligations and contracts, and names Muslims’ pledges with the others as ‘God’s covenant’, the following verses are only a few examples:
“O you who have faith! Keep your agreements...” Sura al-Ma’idah:1
“Fulfill Allah’s covenant when you pledge…” Sura an-Nahl: 91”
The Acting Foreign Minister further emphasized, “Any Islamic government which enters into an agreement with other nations, and concludes an economic, political, military, or cultural contract is religiously bound to fulfill the contract even though it is against its benefits.”
According to Sheikh al-Islam, protection of the oppressed is a basic foreign policy principle of the Islamic government of Iran which has been pursued over the past 30 years by all Iranian cabinets. “Accordingly, following the example of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, many resistance movements have been formed across the world”.
In response to the question as how he evaluated the performance of the Islamic Republic of Iran as a government in terms of its foreign policy, he said, “The most important achievement of the Islamic Republic over the past 30 years was that it could prove to the world that it is possible to establish a religious democratic state. As Imam Khomeini (May God be pleased with him) has shown, people can be successful with a Godly motivation and can move forward for the purpose of unity, even without receiving any support; the Islamic Republic of Iran has been able to invite other nations to this path an evidence of which is the various resistance movements against the tyrants across the world.
“Ever since the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, we have been able to prove the strong links which exist between the religious Quranic principles and politics; Imam Khomeini explained the principles in simple words, and Martyr Beheshti (Iran’s first Chief Justice) applied those principles in codification of the Constitution.”
According to the Acting Foreign Minister, “We are the inheritors of the treasury given by the Prophet of Islam (PBUH), and remaining from the event of Ashura. We must stay alert not to fail in this experience; as an Islamic government, we should not disappoint the oppressed across the world by our mistakes.”
He referred to hijab (Islamic veil) as a major evidence to prove the influence of the Islamic government of Iran in the international arena, and added, “Some time in the past, before the revolution, we had to fight for hijab; today, after 30 years, we witness ‘Marwah al-Sherbini” martyred in the same path we started.”
As with the unity in the Islamic world, he compared the performance of the Islamic Republic of Iran with certain countries which claim to be Muslim states, saying, “We are supported by the rich Shia culture and the issue of Wilayat (love of Imams and allegiance to them), which is lacking in most apparently Muslim countries. At times such countries adopt a defensive stance in this respect; they do not represent the Quranic verse “strong against unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other….”, rather it seems to be the opposite.”
