The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) strongly condemned the digs being carried out in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque by the Israeli occupation authorities in a frantic race to dig two tunnels, measuring 65 and 22 meters respectively, and two elevators, in order to link the Al-Sharf District to Al-Buraq Square and Al-Magharba Gate of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
In a communiqué, ISESCO explained that Al-Sharaf District is a Muslim area located inside the Old City with an area of more than 133 domes, close to Al Magharba District, which was destroyed by the Israeli occupation authorities in 1967, after having expelled thousands of Palestinians and confiscated their houses and estates. Only a handful of them were left in, in addition to two mosques - one of them shut down and the other opened only for Dhur (noon) and Asr (mid-afternoon) prayers, with the Azan (call to prayer) being banned, according to the communiqué.
ISESCO’s communiqué said that according to reliable information revealed by Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowments and Heritage, the Israeli occupation authorities had begun excavation works at Al-Sharaf District last November 18th, only tens of meters west of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The aim of building those tunnels and elevators, ISESCO’s communiqué says, is to deliver as many foreign tourists and Jewish fanatics as possible to Al-Buraq Wall and the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque, especially the Al Magharba Gate, within the framework of a plot aimed at judaizing the Mosque.
ISESCO pointed out that during these excavation works, historical and archaeological monuments, dating back to Ottoman and Memluk eras and others from the late Islamic era, were being destroyed and obliterated.
The Islamic organization added that a report by Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowments and Heritage revealed that the so-called Israeli Antiquities Authority is actually carrying out deep digs in the area.
ISESCO also revealed the Israeli authorities' intention to dig those two tunnels and install an electric elevator in the vertical tunnel and an electric corridor in the horizontal one, and that the planned location of the said tunnels is the meeting point of several archaeological sites, through which Israel is trying to develop an illusionary Hebrew history.
The Communiqué of ISESCO also said that the digging operations are being carried out in collaboration between the occupation's municipality, the so-called Jewish Quarter Preservation and Development Company, Monuments Authority, and National Insurance Institute, and with the funding of the Jewish extremist Baruch Klein.
In the same vein, ISESCO called upon the Islamic world States to assume their duty to defend those sanctities using all means available, and urged the international community to press Israel into stopping its digs near Al-Aqsa Mosque as they constitute a blatant breach of international law.
By the same token, the Organization launched an urgent appeal to UNESCO to carry out an international campaign to save the Islamic sanctities in Al-Quds, which constitute a world cultural and civlizational heritage.
On this occasion, ISESCO urged the Palestinians to close their ranks and put their differences aside since they only undermine their standpoint, and invited them to work together so as to address the dangers looming over Al-Quds as capital of the Palestinian State.
