Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Hassan Akhtari, head of the Central Headquarters of Islamic Unity Week Commemoration, made the remark at a press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.
Today, even non-Islamic societies pay attention to and support the oppressed people of Palestine, but the Islamic Ummah should act as it deserves and the governments and officials of Islamic countries should act better in this matter, he stated.
“One of the important goals of the Unity Week later this month is that through the programs and activities of this week, with the will of Almighty God, in line with the annual programs and the occasion of the 1500th birthday of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), we can draw the attention of the world to the oppression of the Palestinian people.”
The problem of Palestine and the oppression of the people of that region is not a problem of the past, but a current and everyday problem, he said. “Every day we witness thousands of people being martyred and many children losing their lives. In addition, the problem of hunger, poverty and lack of medical and livelihood facilities of the Palestinian people (in Gaza) is one of the great pains of Muslims.”
Referring to the coincidence of the Unity Week with the 1500th year of the birth of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), the cleric said it is a special opportunity to introduce the importance of unity at the national and international levels.
The issue of unity is very important because it has been emphasized both from a rational and human point of view and from the point of view of religious teachings, especially in Islam and by the beloved Prophet of Islam (PBUH), Hojat-ol-Islam Akhtari stated. “In the Holy Quran, God Almighty has clearly emphasized the necessity of a single Ummah.”
Emphasizing that the most important program of this week is the International Islamic Unity Conference to be held by the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought, he hoped that God will bless all the extensive programs of this week to be implemented and presented in the best way.
“I hope that the research and academic centers with good preparations will be able to provide new contents and scientific innovations in the matter of explaining the unity of the Islamic Ummah, the necessity of unity, the teachings of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) and the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and these works will be translated into different languages and published in the world.”

The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on September 10 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (Friday, September 5) as the birthday of the last prophet.
The interval between the two dates was declared the Islamic Unity Week by the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, in the 1980s.
The occasion is marked this year as Muslims in the besieged Gaza Strip are facing genocidal attacks by Israeli forces. The Israeli regime launched its devastating war on October 7, 2023. More than 63,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and many others injured in the Israeli attacks on Gaza. There have also been many fatalities as a result of starvation caused by the Israeli siege on the Palestinian enclave.
