The Holy Quran’s therapeutic effect on both body and soul is a significant topic which has also been highlighted in the Book in three different verses.
This has been discussed in an article by Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Taghi Sarfipour, Friday prayer leader of Delfan in Lorestan Province.
The author maintains that based on Verse 57 of Surah Yunus (Jonah) [Oh people, an admonition has now come to you from your Lord, and a healing for what is in the hearts, a guide and a mercy to believers], Verse 44 of Surah Fussilat […say: 'to the believers it is a guidance and a healing; but to those who do not believe, there is a heaviness in their ears…] and Verse 82 of Surah Al-Isra [we sent down of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to believers, but to the evildoers it does not increase them, except in loss], the Quran introduces itself as an effective healer for true believers.
Referring to the characteristics of disbelievers and evildoers in the Book, he writes: “Polytheism is the most unforgivable sin in view of the Quran and this can be applied to curing diseases as well. A true believer only trusts in God as the best healer of his physical and spiritual illnesses and regards others as mere means for his treatment. Accordingly, only those who try to purify themselves can find their remedy in the Holy Book.”
Elsewhere in the article, the writer highlights the Quran’s spiritual healing effect, noting: “Spiritual and ethical illnesses can be as harmful as the physical ones and both require certain remedies. The Holy Book offers the best prescription for purging oneself from negative qualities and overcoming one’s fears and weaknesses.”
“The highly effective role of the Quran in curing man’s physical and psychological diseases has already been investigated by a number of psychologists and published under the title of ‘Effects of Quran Recitation in Improving Man’s Psychological Health and Reducing His Stresses’.
“Also, similar results of the researches conducted in Islamic countries confirm the Quran’s promise to save men from depression and disappointment and relieve their spiritual pains by inviting them to hope, patience, remembrance of God and calmness in heart.”
