TEHRAN (IQNA) – President of Lebanon’s Higher Shia Council Ayatollah Abdul-Amir Qabalan called on the Lebanese people to strengthen unity to tackle the country’s problems.

Addressing a ceremony held to celebrate the birth anniversary of Hazrat Zahra (SA) on Saturday, the senior cleric said the Lebanese people should work together to rid the country of problems such as corruption and rioting.

He also underlined the need for strengthening national unity in the country.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Qabalan said all Muslims ought to follow the teachings and Seerah of Hazrat Zahra (SA) in life.

Since October 17, Lebanon has been rocked by nationwide protests against rising inflation and living costs as the government struggles to attract investment amid increasing economic hardships and a decreasing capital flow to the country.

The protesters blame the faltering economy on widespread corruption and abuse of privileges among politicians as the national debt hovers around $85 billion.

Successive governments have also failed to address a waste management crisis or improve the electricity grid, which is plagued by daily power cuts.
