He was born in 1933 in the village of Bujairam in Egypt’s Menofia Governorate. In early childhood, he started learning the Quran and religious teachings. He memorized the Holy Book and learned the rules of Tajweed.

Later he joined the Shibra Quranic institute to enhance his Quranic skills and learn different Qira’at (styles of recitation).

Since he had a beautiful voice and was skillful in Lahn (correct pronunciation of Quranic words), al-Bujairami began reciting the Quran in different programs and followed the style of the famous qaris of the time.

He was very interested in the Lahn style of Sheikh Mustafa Ismail and, therefore, began his Quranic path by imitating Sheikh Mustafa Ismail’s style in Lahn.

When he gained mastery in recitation, al-Bujairami took an examination at Egypt’s Quran Radio in 1986 and joined other prominent qaris of the radio after passing the exam.

He recited the Holy Book at the studio as well as in programs and Quranic circles outside the studio which were covered by the Quran Radio and broadcast for listeners in and outside of Egypt.

One of the Quranic events he regularly attended was the morning recitation programs at Imam Hussein (AS) in Cairo in which he performed excellent recitations.

In 1966, he became the qari of Omar ibn Abdul Aziz Mosque in Heliopolis, a suburb of Cairo and in 1980 he was chosen as the qari of the AIn al-Hayat Mosque.

By then he had gained prominence and was frequently invited to different Muslim countries, including the United Arab Emirates to recite the Quran.

Some experts say al-Bujairami at first was slow in articulating some letters and in order to improve in this area he was urged by a renowned Egyptian musician to go to Sheikh Darwish al-Hariri to learn from his experiences and enhance his skills.

After years of serving the Holy Quran and producing brilliant works in the field of Quran recitation, Sheikh Mahmoud al-Bujairami died in 1992.
