TEHRAN (IQNA) – Late Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary was a qari who recited the Holy Quran with all his heart.

This is according to Ali Gumaa, a member of Egypt’s Council of Senior Scholars, speaking in a Radio program dubbed “Egypt; Land of Quran Recitation”.

He added that al-Hussary was known as ‘first teacher’ due to his amazing recitation and his role in developing the quality of Quran recitation in the country.

Gumma noted that when al-Hussary went from his hometown of Tanta to Cairo to take the exam for entering the Quran Radio as a qari, the top qaris of the time who listened to his recitation and assessed his qualifications, including Sheikh Mahmoud Baraniq and Sheikh Amir bin Othman, told him, “This is what we call a recitation.”

Gumma further said that Sheikh al-Hussary was also a senior scholar who wrote 10 books and gifted them to Egypt’s Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs.

Born on September 17, 1917, al-Hussary was among the most prominent Quran reciters in Egypt.

He committed the entire Quran to memory by age 8 and started reciting at public gatherings by age 12.

He was the first qari to release his Tarteel recitation of the entire Quran in cassettes.

In a competition held in 1944 for choosing the best qari of Egypt’s Quran Radio, he came first among 200 reciters.

Al-Hussary was elected the head of the Muslim World’s Union of Quran Reciters in 1968.

He died on November 24, 1980, during a trip to Kuwait.
