Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei approved a proposal from Iran’s Judiciary Chief Hojat-ol-Islam Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei to pardon or commute the prison terms of 2,654 convicts found guilty by various Iranian courts.
The Leader granted the pardon on Sunday on the occasion of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mohseni Ejei had sent a letter to Ayatollah Khamenei, proposing a list of convicts deserving clemency.
Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.
The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in the armed smuggling of narcotics, arms trafficking, kidnapping, acid attacks, rape, armed robbery, bribery, embezzlement, counterfeit money forgery, money laundering, disruption of economy, smuggling of alcoholic drinks, and organized smuggling of commodities.
Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is one of the most joyous and blessed occasions for Muslims around the world.
Eid Al-Adha coincides with the completion of Hajj – the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca – in Saudi Arabia, which is an obligation for every able Muslim once in their lifetime.
It falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the last and most sacred month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims often fast on the first nine days of this month to seek God’s mercy and blessings.
