IQNA – Sheikh Ali al-Banna, a renowned Egyptian qari, left behind a valuable legacy of Quran recitations for Egypt's Quran Radio, as well as for the radio stations of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

July 20 marked the anniversary of the demise of one of Egypt and the Arab world's most famous Quranic reciters, known for his sweet and humble voice.

Sheikh Mahoud Ali al-Banna was born on December 17, 1926, a village named Shibra in Egypt’s Menofia Governorate.

He memorized the Holy Quran with Sheikh Musa Al-Mantash and became a Hafiz at the age of 11.

He then moved to Tanta to study Islamic sciences at the Al-Ahmadi Mosque, where he received permission to recite from Imam Ibrahim bin Salam Maliki, as per a report by Alwafd on Saturday.

Sheikh al-Banna moved to Cairo in 1945, where his fame grew. While in Cairo, he studied under Sheikh Darwish El-Hariri.

In 1948, Maher Pasha, then Prime Minister of Egypt, and Prince Abdul Karim al-Khattabi invited him to join the radio. His voice was first broadcast on the radio reciting Surah Hud, and he quickly became one of Egypt's most famous qaris.

Sheikh Ali al-Banna traveled extensively, reciting the Quran at the Prophet’s Mosque, Grand Mosque of Mecca, and across many Arab countries. He also visited numerous European countries to recite the Quran.

Al-Banna was instrumental in the establishment of a union for qaris and became its deputy after its founding in 1984.

He left behind a precious collection of Tarteel recitations recorded in 1967 and Quranic recitations for the Quran Radio in Egypt, as well as for the radio stations in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Sheikh Mahmoud Ali al-Banna passed away on July 20, 1985. After decades of dedicated service to the Holy Quran, he was buried in his hometown, near his mosque.
