As reported by the website of the shrine, over 2,000 surveillance cameras equipped with advanced technologies have been installed throughout Karbala as part of the shrine’s integrated security strategy for Muharram.
Rasoul Fazelah, head of the shrine’s General Security Administration, stated, “A joint operations room has been established in coordination with various departments of the shrine and local security forces to secure Muharram commemorations and safeguard pilgrims entering Karbala.”
He noted that the surveillance network consists of more than 2,000 cameras positioned across all entry and exit points of the old city. “The system uses advanced facial recognition and real-time data analysis powered by artificial intelligence,” Fazelah said. “A dedicated cybersecurity team is in place to defend technical systems against hacking attempts or electronic threats.”

Fazelah also mentioned the deployment of modern inspection equipment at the shrine’s entrances, including scanners capable of detecting foreign objects inside bags and carts.
Among the installed devices, he added, are specialized cameras that can instantly count the number of pilgrims and provide real-time data on crowd density and movement patterns. “This information helps the operations room manage congestion and organize incoming and outgoing traffic more efficiently,” he said.

These measures, Fazelah emphasized, are part of a broader initiative by the Imam Hussein (AS) shrine to provide the highest level of protection for pilgrims and to ensure the safe and peaceful observance of Ashura, a major Shia religious occasion marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.
