Abdul Hakim Abdul Latif; An Egyptian Qari Who Spent 70 Years of His Life in Serving Quran

IQNA – Sheikh Abdul Hakim Abdul Latif was a renowned Egyptian qari who spent more than 70 years of his life in the service of the Holy Quran.

He was a former Sheikh al-Qurra (most senior Quran reciter) of the Arab country.

His works in the science of Quran recitation still remain as a reference for qaris and Quranic sciences researchers.

Monday, September 9, 2024, marked the 8th anniversary of his death, according to Al-Jumhuriyah website.

Abdul Hakim was born in 1936 in Cairo. He went to a Maktab (traditional Quran school) and learned Quran recitation and memorization with Sheikh Imam Abduh Halawah and his brother Sheikh Abdullah Abduh Halawah.

He managed to memorize the entire Quran at the age of 12.

He later studied Quranic sciences and Fiqh at the Quran Qara’at Center of Al-Azhar Islamic Center.

After graduation, Abdul Hakim started teaching at an elementary school in Alexandria, then in Cairo and other cities.

He also worked as an inspector for Al-Azhar-affiliated institutes and retired in 1997.

He served as the senior qari in many Quranic circles in the Egyptian capital’s mosques, supervising the recitations of prominent qaris.

He also recited the Quran in Egypt’s Quran Radio and recorded his recitations of the entire Quran in different styles and narrations.

He traveled to many countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United States and countries in Southeast Asia for Quran recitation and serving as an arbiter in international Quran competitions.

Abdul Hakim also wrote a number of books in the science of Qara’at.

He was from the last generation of great Egyptian qaris who learned the science of Qara’at in Maktabs.

Sheikh Abdul Hakim Abdul Latif died at the age of 80 on September 9, 2016.
