Speaking with IQNA in a telephone interview, Taruti said, “I think it was because of the great moral qualities of Sheikh Rif’at that God blessed him with such a beautiful voice that managed to charm Muslims of all generations.”
Sheikh Rif'at managed to touch the hearts of all generations despite the technological limitations of his time and lack of high quality equipment to record his voice, he noted. “In his day, there were only tapes that did not accurately reflect the quality of his voice.”
Taruti added that Sheikh Rif'at was very intimate with the poor and recited the Quran without thinking about money. “I think he had a special relationship with God. That is why his recitations were so exceptional that even today Quran reciters try to imitate him and follow his style.”
“His recitation style was related to the meaning of the Quran. You notice no fatigue or voice tremor when you listen to his recitations. If a reciter succeeds in imitating Sheikh Rif'at for five minutes, he has really made an achievement.”
“In my opinion, his recitations of Surah Kahf and Surah Hud are the most beautiful,” Taruti went on to say.
Sheikh Muhammad Rif’at (who died in 1950) is considered by many as the best Quran reciter in the 20th century.
