Samarra Ready to Be Named Capital of Islamic Civilization in Iraq

IQNA – The city of Samarra in the Salah al-Din governorate, central Iraq, is about to be named a capital of Islamic civilization.

The Iraqi cabinet decided in 2020 to enhance the status of Samarra as a cultural capital of the Islamic world.

Now, with international support, the city is going to be named the capital of Islamic civilization in Iraq.

A team of domestic and international experts is currently working on a comprehensive project to elevate its cultural and historical status.

Ali Ubaid Shalgham, director of the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage said technical and logistical support will be provided for the implementation of the project in cooperation with UNESCO.

He stressed the need to protect the city's archaeological sites and improve coordination among officials to ensure the protection of Samarra's cultural heritage.

Samarra, north of Baghdad, is an important historical city that houses the holy shrines of Imam Hadi (AS) and Imam Hassan al-Askari (AS) and has several historical sites.  

The Samarra Archaeological City was inscribed in 2007 on the List of World Heritage in Danger at the 31st session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee.
