Ramadan is an opportunity to strengthen faith, purify the soul, and manage negative emotions such as anger and anxiety.

Fasting during this month is not just about abstaining from food and drink. It also involves controlling one’s behavior, speech, and even thoughts. The Holy Quran emphasizes the importance of controlling anger and anxiety in several verses and provides guidance on how to manage these emotions.

For, example, God says in Verse 134 of Surah Al Imran, “Those who spend (benevolently) in ease as well as in straitness, and those who restrain (their) anger and pardon men; and Allah loves the doers of good (to others).”

This verse clearly emphasizes the importance of controlling anger and considers it a sign of goodness and piety.

During Ramadan, those who fast can practice patience and endurance, allowing them to manage their anger and overlook the mistakes of others instead of reacting harshly.

Fasting teaches individuals how to gain control over their carnal desires by imposing limitations on eating, drinking, and other physical activities. When a person refrains from eating and drinking throughout the day, they are essentially practicing self-control. This practice impacts not only the physical aspect but also has effects on the spiritual and psychological dimensions. The person who fasts learns how to resist negative emotions such as anger and rage.

God says in Verse 183 of Surah Al-Baqarah, “Believers, fasting has been made mandatory for you as it was made mandatory for the people before you, so that you may have fear of God.”

The emphasis on Taqwa (piety, God-fearing) in this verse shows that the main goal of fasting is to cultivate piety and self-restraint, which significantly involves managing emotions and behaviors.

As a result, Ramadan is an opportunity to practice anger management by strengthening patience. According to the teachings of the Quran, the fruit of fasting is piety, and piety helps to control negative emotions such as anger.
