Muslim Group Welcomes Canada’s Recognition of Palestinian Statehood

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) has publicly welcomed the Canadian government’s recent announcement to recognize Palestinian statehood, describing it as a long-overdue move that acknowledges the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.

“This is a historic day for Canada,” said NCCM CEO Stephen Brown at a news conference in Ottawa. “We’re glad to see our country join the global majority towards the announcement of an upcoming formal recognition of Palestinian sovereignty in September.”

Canada’s planned recognition comes amid growing international calls for an end to the suffering of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, where Israel’s ongoing aggression has led to widespread civilian casualties, including many women children. The recognition is seen as aligning Canada with the global consensus that Palestinian sovereignty is key to achieving lasting peace.

Brown stressed that Palestinians’ right to a state of their own is non-negotiable. “We will never stop recognizing the right of Palestinian people to exist and their right to a sovereign state where they can govern themselves, set their own future, and their inalienable right to self-determination,” he said.

He rejected any delay in action, stating: “There can be no delays towards recognizing this inalienable right... This decision is more than symbolic.”

Brown highlighted the significance of Canada's stance, especially in the face of the Israeli regime’s “ongoing atrocities.” He noted, “Sovereignty is essential to the survival and dignity of all people, which of course includes the Palestinian people.”

He thanked Prime Minister Mark Carney and other officials for supporting the move but emphasized that recognition must lead to action. “Israel is still starving and shooting Palestinians to death, and most notably children. Canadians across this country are bewildered by Israel’s unrelenting atrocities.”

Calling it a moral and humanitarian imperative, Brown urged for the borders to be opened so aid can reach Gaza. “If they need assistance, we are there to help,” he said
