IQNA – The Holy Quran says: “Had they been widely separated from one another, We would surely have punished those who disbelieved from among them with a painful punishment.” (Verse 25 of Surah Al-Fat’h)

Holy Quran

Someone asked Imam Sadiq (AS) why (according to Shia beliefs) Imam Ali (AS) did not fight (for his right) during the event of Saqifa. In response, Imam Sadiq (AS) read out this verse. That person asked what Tazayul of disbelievers and believers meant. Imam (AS) said: The trusts of believers in the Aslab (backs) of disbelievers. The advent of Imam Zaman (AS) is also the same. As long as these trusts have not come out of the Aslab of disbelievers, the Savior will not reappear. Only after they have come out of the Aslab of disbelievers, Imam Zaman (AS) will reappear and defeat the enemies.

In fact, the point that person was making was that if Imam Ali (AS) had started fighting during the Saqifa, he would need to fight a few individuals, but later, during the time he was the Caliph, he was forced to fight several hundred people. According to Hadith, the reason for this delay was to give the divine trusts to grow, namely those who had the capacity and aptitude for growth but the opportunity for their growth had not been provided yet.

During the conquest of Mecca, too, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) did not allow retribution (against disbelievers) in order to prevent future seditions, because among the people of Mecca and their Aslab, there were believing people.

Nonetheless, religious assortment is a process that naturally takes time. Of course, many a time, growths do not take place in the same geographical locations as falls occur. That is to say, falls may occur next to us while growths happen in the other side of the world.
