IQNA – Days after starting a teaching trial in Varnasi, India’s Uttar Pradesh, Samreen Bano says she was dismissed for wearing her hijab.

The Muslim teacher’s complaint has renewed debate over religious expression in Indian workplaces and educational institutions.

In an Instagram video, Bano expressed deep frustration over the challenges faced by new Muslim teachers. “In today’s times, it is extremely difficult for a new Muslim teacher to grow professionally,” she said.

She said widespread prejudice prevents parents from sending their children to Muslim teachers. “No matter where you go—whether for a demo lesson or an interview—you are turned away simply because you are a Muslim,” Bano added.

She further said that children are indoctrinated with fear and bias, making it difficult to teach them. “Their minds have been filled with these prejudices… it gradually becomes difficult to handle them,” she said, questioning how a teacher can educate a child who “hates me the moment I walk into the classroom.”

Bano emphasized that she respects all faiths and never pushes her beliefs on others.

On May 9, Bano shared another video alleging that Buddha Public School in Latho, Varanasi, asked her to either remove her hijab or leave. She stated that no such condition was mentioned during her interview.

When she pointed out that other teachers wear sindoor and mangalsutra to express their faith, the school management reportedly replied, “It is about equality… Not everyone is the same. Go wherever it suits you.”

Bano accused the school of violating her religious freedom under Articles 25 and 19 of the Indian Constitution and described the incident as “total propaganda against Muslims.”

She warned that hiring teachers based solely on religion could make the profession increasingly difficult for minorities.
