Fahmi Huwaidi, distinguished Egyptian thinker and writer said that the forced resignation or sacking of Sheikh Mohammad Tantawi will restore damaged dignity and tarnished image of Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in Sunni Islam.
In an article published in Egyptian daily Almesri Alyawm, Fahmi Huwaidi pointed out that during the tenure of Tantawi, Alazhar's status as the most prestigious Islamic tertiary education center diminished and was subject to insults and contempt.

"Unfortunately, Sheikh Tantawi totally forgot the fact that his position and status required him to speak and act more cautiously," he wrote.

Further in his article prominent Egyptian thinker and writer laments that "at present role of Egypt in Muslim world has been dramatically undermined, Tantawi for his part should be blamed for his irresponsible conducts and remarks."

Concluding his article Fahmi Huwaidi has referred to displacing of Palestinians and atrocities of Zionists in the Gaza Strip, regretting that Tantawi's recent statements and conducts such as embracing hated Israeli president and calling for normalization of relations with Zionist have been source of embarrassment for all Muslims across the world.
