With the blessing of God, it was held in complete security on both sides of the border, and all agencies and departments as well as people and pilgrims made efforts for its success, he said at a meeting in Mashhad on Monday.
Momeni highlighted the splendor of the Arbaeen ceremony and said, “Despite the efforts of hostile media to downplay Arbaeen, despite the conditions of the (Israeli) imposed war on Iran) and the hot weather, we had an increase in the number of pilgrims compared to last year, which led to all hostile media becoming angry after Arbaeen ended.”
This year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage took place safely and peacefully and the reason for this is that the 18 related committees got down to work and carried out their duties well, he stated.
Each agency tasked with facilitating the Arbaeen procession took on a duty and carried it out completely, which was the secret to the success of Arbaeen, he went on to say.

Arbaeen is a religious event observed by Shia Muslims on the fortieth day after the Day of Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia imam.
It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, with millions of Shia Muslims, as well as many Sunnis and followers of other religions, walking to Karbala from various cities in Iraq and neighboring countries. The day of Arbaeen 2025 fell on Thursday, August 14.
Elsewhere in his remarks on Monday, the Iranian interior minister said Mashhad and the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) belong to all Iranians.
The hearts of 90 million Iranians are here in Mashhad, he said, adding that on average, all Iranians have been to Mashhad once.
Referring to a rise in the number of people visiting Mashhad in the coming days, Momeni said that given the people’s enthusiasm to be in Mashhad, “it is our duty to follow up on this matter (and facilitate the pilgrimahge for those visiting the city).”
It is predicted that the number of pilgrims in Mashhad will be higher this year than previous years, because people who did not have the opportunity to take part in the Arbaeen procession are trying to travel to Mashhad, he went on to say.
Every year during the last days of the lunar Hijri month of Safar, millions of pilgrims visit Mashhad to attend mourning rituals.
The 28th of Safar, which falls on Friday, August 22, marks the demise anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS).
The 30th day of the lunar month, August 24 this year, is marked as the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shia Imam.
