Dr. Ali Mohiuddin Qurra Daghi, the deputy chairman of the union, which includes 60000 scholars, said in a statement on Saturday during a conference in Doha on Palestinian refugees that the fasting day would be in solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners who plan to go on hunger strike to protest cruel incarceration conditions in Israeli jails.
For their part, Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza called in a press release on Saturday for a similar fasting day on Monday in solidarity with those prisoners.
The statement lashed out at the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah for maintaining contacts with Israel and trying to revive the so-called peace process, which would provide a cover-up for “Zionist crimes”.
