The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, hailed the move by Egypt to call off a gas export deal with Israel as a positive and brave step for safeguarding Egypt’s national interests.
Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Mahmoud Al-Zahar of Hamas said the decision was in the interest of Egypt’s economy and the Egyptian nation, Al-Riyadh daily reported.
He urged Egypt to reconsider other agreements signed with the Zionist regime under the rule of former dictator Hosni Mubarak.
Al-Zahar also called on Egypt to take steps to help the Palestinian nation and export gas to Palestine.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri also described Egypt’s move as courageous.
Cairo on Sunday informed Egypt’s AMG company to cut off gas export to Israel.
According to a deal signed between Hosni Mubarak regime and Israel in 2005, Egypt agreed to export 7 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Israel in 20 years. Since the fall of Mubarak, the pipeline that transfer gas to Israel has been blown up 14 times.
