Quran readers known for their eloquent sound have taken part in an international festival in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
The two-day festival in Sulaymaniyah province has focused on memorizing and reciting the holy book.
This has been the first international Quran festival in Sulaymaniyah province. Quran readers from Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt and Iran have been among those taking part. Ahmed is originally from Bangladesh but learned to recite the Quran in Egypt. He says the festival’s organizer - Kochar Omar - has made him change his perception of Kurdish people.
Sulaymaniyah’s local government has sponsored the event. The province’s religious endowments directorate has also cooperated.
Kurdistan’s regional government is more secular than religious. But a high turnout at the festival shows that Iraqi Kurds take religion very seriously. Participants have hopes that this festival will be the first of more to come.
