Sayyed Hassan Al-Mousawi who heads Kuwait’s Quranic Institutes’ Society told IQNA that the level of Quranic activities in Kuwait is low and personal methods of learning the Quran have more prevalence than group learning methods.
Most Quranic activities in Kuwait are carried out by individuals and volunteers who hold courses on Tajweed, Quran interpretation and contemplating the Quran, he said.
Al-Mousawi said some of Quranic educational institutes in the Persian Gulf state are permanent and some of them are active only in certain days in the year, for example in the holy month of Ramadan or during summer.
The courses are taught by those who have Quran teaching certificates and have the capability of teaching the Quran, he noted.
The Quranic figure also noted that teaching memorization of the Holy Quran has the top priority in Quranic centers and then importance is attached to recitation.
As for the memorization method in Kuwaiti Quran institutes, he said those learning the Quran by heart have a weekly program based on which they memorize half Hizb (part of Quran) during the week and at the end of the week review what they have memorized.
According to Al-Mousawi, those who learn the entire Quran by heart receive a certificate confirming their accomplishment.
He also said that new technologies are not normally used in Quran memorization sessions and that the learners memorize the Quran using traditional methods.
He underlined that as well as learning the verses by heart, Quran memorizers contemplate the meaning of the verses.
“There are Quran interpretation and contemplation sessions in Kuwait, some of which have been held regularly for 15 years and have a large number of attendees. They include Quran sessions taught by masters Mustafa Faraj and Abdul-Aziz Baqer.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Al-Mousawi referred to the best age for memorizing the Quran and said childhood is the best time for learning the Holy Book by heart and contemplating it.
He also praised the plan in the Islamic Republic of Iran for training 10 million memorizers of the Quran and regarded it as a great and important plan.
