The existence of Quran translations in local African languages shows the spiritual and linguistic need of the people of the continent.
Jamal Dimbour, representative of the Republic of Mali in the “Quran and Culture of Nations” Section of the 21st International Holy Quran Exhibition made the remark in an interview with IQNA, adding that until a few years ago, only translations of the Quran in languages such as English and French were available for the African people.
“Today, however, people have gained linguistic independence and can read the translations of the holy book in their local languages.”
Asked about Quranic education in his country, Mr. Dimbour said children in Mali can enter Quranic schools at the age of 7. “They first learn how to correctly read the Quran and then start learning the Quran by heart.”
He said the government of Mali has started supervising Quranic schools and tries to support the Quran learners.
According to Mr. Dimbour, there was little supervision in the past and radical groups misused the situation to trap teenage students into their radical ideology.
He further said it is the first time he attends the Quran exhibition in Iran, adding that he is surprised at seeing the enthusiastic presence of Iranians at the exhibition.
“I hope we will one day witness that such exhibitions are held in all Islamic countries,” he said.
The Malian seminary student who converted to Shia Islam a few years ago said Shi’ism used to be unknown in Africa until the victory of the Islamic Revolution. “But since the revolution’s victory and publication of books in Africa about Shia teachings and Iranians, people in Africa learned about the school of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS). I embraced Shia Islam after studying about it extensively.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Mr. Dimbour pointed to the “Quran and Culture of Nations” Section of the International Quran Exhibition and said the section provides an opportunity for the visitors to learn about the Quranic culture and lifestyle in 30 countries.
