TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the world should know that Islam is not a religion of extremism and violence, but one of tolerance and moderation.

In an address on Wednesday to the opening of the 28th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, he urged Muslims to introduce to the world the true Islam, which is one of moderation and compassion.
“(Let’s) stand up against extremism and violence and tell the world that Islam is not a religion of extremism and violence but one of tolerance and forbearance,” he added.
The Iranian chief executive stressed the need for Muslim unity and said the importance of unity should be taught to Muslim children since elementary school.
He regretted that a group of mercenaries is distorting the image of Islam and condemned the Takfiri ISIL militants for committing atrocities in Iraq and Syria in the name of Islam.
He said the militant group is defaming Islam by slitting the throats of innocent men and women.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani warned that the world colonialists seek to foment discord in the Muslim world to ensure their domination of Islamic lands and easily plunder Muslim resources.
The 28th International conference on Islamic unity kicked off Wednesday morning in Tehran.
Some 500 personalities, scholars, and thinkers from 65 countries are present at the conference.
The participants will discuss the theme of the conference, namely “United Muslim Ummah, Challenges and Strategies”.
They will meet with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution on Thursday morning.
The conference will conclude in a ceremony on Friday night.
