TEHRAN (IQNA) – Like previous years, the courtyards of the holy mausoleum of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf, Iraq, were covered with red carpets at the beginning of Muharram.

According to ImamAli.net website, the measure is taken every year in the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar to better serve the mourners and pilgrims.

Haidar Muhamad, an official with the Astan (custodianship) of the holy shrine, said the red carpets cover an area of 12,000 square meters.

Shia Muslims around the world mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the Sayyid-ul-Shuhada (master of martyrs), in Muharram.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
