In the statement, a copy of which has been given to IQNA, the IUMS underlined protecting the sanctity of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as a religious duty of all Muslims.

Signed by IUMS President Ahmad al-Raysuni and its Secretary General Ali al-Qaradaghi, the statement also urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to hold a summit to discuss necessary measures against those behind the insult and pass resolutions to prevent desecration of Islamic sanctities.

“It is the duty of leaders and politicians to remind the ruling party in India and that country’s government of the consequences of such shameful behaviors,” it said.

The statement said what the ruling “racist” party in India has done is a “heinous crime” that must be condemned universally.

The IUMS also called on Muslims all over the world to hold peaceful rallies in front of India’s embassies to denounce the sacrilegious move as well as measures adopted in India against Muslims’ religious freedoms.

It further called on the government of India to officially apologize for the desecration as well as attacks on Muslims, warning that continuation of such racist moves would lead to a boycott of India by Muslim countries.

The insulting remarks about the Holy Prophet (PBUH) by two spokespersons of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) namely Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal have been vehemently condemned by Muslim countries.

Netizens in a number of Islamic countries in the Persian Gulf have called for boycotting Indian products following the incident.

Facing the backlash, the BJP took action on Sunday and suspended the two officials from the party's primary membership till further notice.

In a statement, the BJP claimed that it “strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion,” without directly pointing to the recent incident.

Iran, Qatar and Kuwait also summoned Indian envoys to voice their strong protest.
