It was held last week on the occasion of Eid al-Ghadir by the Dar-ul-Quran Center affiliated to the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine.

Dilal al-Tabatabaei, an official with the center’s women’s section, said this was the second edition of the Ghadir Quran competition for women.

She said the first edition was held virtually last year due to the coronavirus situation but this year’s edition was in-person.

The Hazrat Zahra (AS) courtyard of the mausoleum of Imam Ali (AS) hosted the competition in the categories of recitation and memorization of the Quran with the participation of 114 Iraqi women, she noted.

According to Tabatabaei, Quran experts and top memorizers of the Astan served as members of the panel of judges, assessing the contenders’ performances.

The competition had two stages, with 30 of the top contestants making it to the final round in the two categories.

Winners were announced and awarded at a ceremony held to mark Eid al-Ghadir earlier this week.

The event of Ghadir, or Eid al-Ghadir, is celebrated by Shia Muslims around the world every year. It is among important feasts and happy holidays of Shia Muslims held on the 18th day of Dhul Hijjah in the lunar Hijri calendar.

It was the day when according to reports, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) as his caliph and the Imam after himself following an order from God.

This year’s Eid al-Ghadir was celebrated on July 18.
