TEHRAN (IQNA) – A look at the history of Iran after the arrival of Islam shows that the Holy Quran has always had a special status among Iranian religious scholars, scientists and thinkers but not among rulers.

Religion and politics

Iranian scholars and thinkers have tried to show the compatibility of Quranic verses with new scientific discoveries and ideas.

In Iran’s Islamic philosophy, a major part of philosophers’ efforts have been focused on establishing a rational system based on which whatever the Quran says can be proved rationally. A number of Iranian philosophers, including Avicenna, Farabi, Fakhr Razi, Suhrawardri, Nasireddin Tousi and Mulla Sadra, have made a lot of efforts to that aim. After Mulla Sadra, though, there has been no new philosophical system established so that we can assess its link with the Quran.

In the field of practical Hikma (wisdom), especially in the area of society’s policy, it should be noted that we have a few political philosophers among Iranian philosophers and thinkers. And those few political philosophers were statesmen themselves.

An important point is that respecting and paying attention to the Quran is seen sometimes in words and sometimes in deeds. Among Umayyad and Abbasid caliphs and among Iranian kings and statesmen there has been great respect for the Quran. Their letters would always begin with verses of the Holy Book. There have been no king or politician who has disrespected the Quran.

However, there are very few who we can say acted upon the Quran.

The Holy Quran says: “: There is the life hereafter which We have prepared for those who do not want to impose their superiority over the others in the land nor commit evil therein. The happy end certainly belongs to the pious ones.” (Surah Al-Qasas, Verse 83)

Few kings or politicians can be found who have acted upon this verse, who have had Taqwa (God-fearing) and have refused to kill and oppress people.

It should also be noted that different philosophical and theological schools have tried to attribute their ideas to the Quran.
