Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb warned against attempts to erase Al-Aqsa Mosque identity and distort its characteristics, considering the plans that have been considered to change its historical and religious reality, Al-Islah website reported.
Al-Tayeb’s remarks were published in a post that was published on his official Facebook and X accounts on the occasion of the Mi’raj (journey of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) from the Grand Mosque in Mecca to Al-Aqsa Mosque in al-Quds and his ascension to the heavens).
In this message, the Sheikh of Al-Azhar emphasized that the Mi’raj of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) indicates the profound importance of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Islamic belief.
“This mosque is not just a historical symbol, but also a fundamental pillar of Muslim identity.”
He also warned against plans to divide Al-Aqsa Mosque and attempts to erase its identity and distort its historical monuments, stressing that Al-Aqsa Mosque is a sacred trust that has been placed on the shoulders of Muslims, a trust that cannot be abandoned, forgotten or erased.

The statement comes at a time when the Israeli occupiers have intensified their policies aimed at Judaizing occupied al-Quds, including Al-Aqsa Mosque, and erasing its Arab and Islamic identity.
This has been exacerbated by the constant attacks and incursions on Al-Aqsa Mosque by illegal Zionist settlers and occupying forces, in an attempt to change the existing reality.
