TEHRAN (IQNA) – Muhammad Sadiq Ibrahim Arjun (1903- 1981) was an Al-Azhar scholar whose written and recorded works about Quran interpretation are good sources for research in the field of Tafseer (Quran interpretation) and Islamic sciences.

Quran interpretation

One of his books is Al-Quran Al-Azim: Hidayat wa I’jaz fi Aqwal al-Mufasireen” (Great Quran: Its Guidance and Miracle in Words of Quran Interpreters). In this book, he has briefly discussed the methods used by interpreters in different eras and their works in this field of Islamic sciences.

He says in the book that interpreters have made all-out efforts in their writings to convey knowledge and teachings to the society and used whatever they had at hand to study and do research on interpretation of the Book of God.

He underlines that the Quran is light and guidance for humanity and invites people to growth and leads them to salvation and happiness in this world and the next and that is the reason why it is an everlasting book that opens the horizons of knowledge and understanding.

Arjun also says in his book that the Quran’s guidance itself is the pillar of the Holy Book’s spiritual miracle.

He wrote another book titled “Nahw Minhaj Li Tafseer al-Quran” (An Approach to Method of Quran Interpretation) in which he calls on Quranic studies researchers to take up good and correct methods with the aim of explaining the Quran’s guidance and its verses and words in a way that proves the Quran’s everlastingness and its status as a book for humanity.

In this book, the Egyptian scholar warns about deviated views that undermine the status of the Quran’s verses and offer arbitrary interpretations to appease some.

He invites scholars to return to the Quran’s divine guidance and offering Islamic-Quranic research that links the contemporary era to the early years after the advent of Islam.

His purpose in this book is not to introduce the Quran interpretation methods to Muslims but to invite putting the Quran in the position in Islamic studies that it deserves.

Arjun underscores that the Quran remains a genuine source from which Arabic sciences and teachings originate but the Muslim Ummah’s scholars and researcher have not given due attention to it.
