TEHRAN (IQNA) – Sins guide individuals outside the correct path. Some people commit sins easily but some others find it very hard to do so because of an inner force named “modesty”.

The mechanism of “modesty” or “shame” goes into effect when we intend to commit a sin or harm ourselves. Either in private or in public, we need to contain our behavior. Otherwise, we will experience increased stress.

Modesty is an innate trait. A number of meanings have been mentioned for this concept. According to a definition, modesty is an inside pressure and force that stops us from taking the wrong action. This force also has an effect that deters individuals from doing that action again.

Deterrence is good if it can really stop harmful behavior. An instance of shame and modesty can be seen in the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph). When Zuleikha put forward her demand, she threw a piece of cloth over the face of an idol. Joseph asked the reason behind her action and Zuleikha said she felt “ashamed” that the idol would see them. Then Joseph said: “Do you feel ashamed of a thing that does not hear, understand, and see? How shouldn’t I be ashamed of God who has created me?”

The meaning of modesty can be understood here. Zuleikha believes the idol was watching her. So, modesty can be described as a feeling between fear and stress.

Imam Sadiq (AS) said: “Modesty is a light that its essence is sublime faith; it creates a deterrent feeling in humans against anything that is incompatible with monotheism and knowledge.” (Misbah al-Shari'ah, p. 189)

This trait keeps us in the realm of knowledge and faith.
