TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraq’s calligraphy association has launched a plan for writing of the Quran in Naskh script by a number of calligraphers.

A meeting of top calligraphers was held last week in which they discussed the size of the copy, quality of ink, size of pen and type of paper used in writing the Mushaf, al-Zaman news website reported.

Each calligrapher was then given several sheets of paper to calligraph verses of the Quran in Naskh in order to choose the best ones for cooperating in the project.

In the following session, discussions will be held on the works before the selected calligraphers start writing the Mushaf.

The copy will be scribes based on the famous Mushaf produced by Muhammad Amin al-Rashidi, a renowned calligrapher of Iraq who lived in the Ottoman era.

The al-Rashidi copy was printed in late 1970s by the Iraqi Awqaf ministry.

It was printed in Germany at the time after revisions introduced under the supervision of eminent Iraqi calligrapher Hashem al-Baghdadi.

Naskh is a specific calligraphic style for writing in the Arabic alphabet, thought to have been invented by Iranian calligrapher Ibn Muqlah Shirazi.

With small modifications, it is the style most commonly used for printing Arabic, Persian, Pashto and Sindhi languages.
