Copy of Quran Written by Pilgrims from 16 Countries Gifted to Custodian of Hazrat Abbas Holy Shrine

TEHRAN (IQNA) – A copy of the Holy Quran handwritten jointly by some 1750 pilgrims from 16 countries was gifted to the custodian of the holy shrine of Hazrat Abbas (AS).

The pilgrims had each handwritten a part of the Quran during the annual Arbaeen season back in September, according to Al-Kafeel website.

The Quran Sciences Institute affiliated to the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine had organized the initiative during the pilgrimage with the aim of promoting the Quranic culture, Mushtaq al-Ali, head of the institute said.

He said the script used in writing this copy is the same as the one used in the Mushaf of the Astan of Hazrat Abbas (AS).

The copy was presented to Seyed Ahmed al-Safi, the custodian of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine, during a visit by the officials of the institute to he holy mausoleum.

According to Sheikh Ziaeddin Zubaidi, the names of pilgrims who contributed to the creation of the handwritten Quran has been mentioned in the copy.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s Arbaeen fell on September 17.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

The pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to the holy city.
