Abdel Aziz Akasha’s Meaning-Based Quran Recitation
His recitation was meaning-based, that is to say, he would change his tone based on the meaning of the verses.
He was among the golden generation of Egyptian qaris along with masters such as Abolainain Shoaisha, Shahat Muhammad Anwar, and Muhammad Al-Hilbawi.
Akasha was born in 1948. He went to a Maktab (traditional Quran school) at the age of four to memorize the Holy Book and after learning Tajweed, received a Quran memorization certificate at 9.
At the age of 16, he went to Cairo and started reciting Adhan (call to prayer) at a mosque in the Egyptian capital.
He later studied at Al-Azhar Islamic University.
Akasha had an attractive and powerful voice. Among the distinguishing features of his recitations is that he changed tone while reciting the Quran. He also laid emphasis on meaning during his recitation.
Akasha visited Iran three times in his lifetime. His first visit was in 2011 when he recited verses from the Holy Quran in the presence of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
He died in 2013 at the age of 63.
