Iran’s Hamid Haghtalab, representing Imam Reza (AS) shrine, took the top prize of the recitation category in the competition which wrapped up on Wednesday.
Representatives of Quranic centers of holy shrines, holy sites and mosques from 23 countries took part in the Quranic event.
Speaking to Astan News on Tuesday, Haghtalab said that the quality of the contest was in part because Qaris and memorizers of holy shrines are the “best their cities.”
He also touched upon his journey from the young age that brought him to among top Iranian qaris.
“From the beginning, our home was filled with the spirit of the Quran. My father had a beautiful voice, and I inherited some of that talent from him. He was my first teacher in learning and reciting the Quran, and since I was a child, I joined him in Quranic circles,” he said.

“This early connection with the Quran, along with participating in Quranic circles and learning from esteemed teachers in Mashhad, strengthened my determination in my Quranic journey,” added the qari.
“One significant platform for my progress was reciting at the circles in the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), he said, adding that “The large audiences who listened to the Quran recitations contributed to my growth as a qari.”
He noted that the Razavi Shrine is a “cultural hub” for the Islamic world, especially for Shias, which placed a “heavy responsibility” on him to deliver a “strong and excellent” recitation.
The competition was organized by the Dar-ol-Quran al-Karim affiliated to the Astan (custodianship) of the Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine under the support of Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalaei, the custodian of the holy mausoleum.
