IQNA – The Malaysian government supports Quran memorizers in pursuing professional careers, says Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Speaking on Friday, he pointed to a significant upcoming event—a gathering of 24,000 huffaz (Quran memorizers) at the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur next month.

“These huffaz, who have memorized the Quran, aspire to become imams and teachers in tahfiz institutions. We will introduce a special program aimed at helping those who have memorized the Quran pursue professional careers,” Zahid said, according to Bernama.

The official also addressed concerns about the alleged marginalization of Islam under the Unity Coalition government, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to integrating Islam into various national programs.

Zahid said that the 2024 budget includes an increased allocation of RM1.9 billion for Islamic initiatives, compared to RM1.4 billion in the previous year.

Zahid also outlined the government's broader efforts to support Islam, including the introduction of pre-tahfiz kindergartens and the enhancement of tahfiz institutions through technical and vocational education programs.

“If anyone claims that this government is endangering Islam, how so? We are addressing issues related to kindergartens, maahad, and mosque development, and improving allowances for religious teachers, takmirs, imams, and bilal,” he said.
