International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the planet. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Islam and the Holy Quran underline the importance of observing the rights of people with disabilities.

The Quran says in Verse 61 of Suran An-Nur:

“It shall be no fault for the blind, the lame, the sick and yourselves to eat from your houses. Nor the houses of your fathers', your mothers', your brothers', your sisters', your paternal uncles, your paternal aunts, your maternal uncles, your maternal aunts or in houses the keys of which you own, or in those of your friend, there is no fault in you that you all eat together, or separately. When you enter houses, greet (with peace) one another with a salutation from Allah, blessed and good. As such Allah makes clear to you His verses so that you understand.”

Disability is a limitation but does not mean inability. The Holy Quran says that the existence of problems and shortages in life is a divine test for people. According to Verses 155-156 of Surah Al-Baqarah, “We shall test you through fear, hunger, loss of life, property, and crops. (Muhammad), give glad news to the people who have patience, and in difficulty say, ‘We are the servants of God and to Him we shall all return’.”
