IQNA – Imam Hassan’s (AS) peace with Umayyid ruler Muawiyah set the ground for the uprising of Imam Hussein (AS) and the epic of Karbala, an Arab author said.

Imam Hassan Mujtaba is buried in the Baqi Cemetery in Medina.

Imam Hassan (AS), the second Shia Imam (AS), who was aware of the events, knew that his followers would suffer greatly from the barbarity of the Umayyads, so he accepted peace primarily for the benefit of Islam and secondarily for the benefit of his followers and lovers, Basma Dolani, an analyst and writer from the Arab world, wrote in an article on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS).

Following are excerpts from the article:

Imam Hassan’s (AS) life was full of knowledge, Jihad, struggle, and fighting oppression to preserve the religion of Islam. He suffered greatly in his community, alongside his people and those who were among his companions, and was subjected to many persecutions and abuses.

His companions and followers blamed him for making peace with Muawiyah and were unaware of the Imam’s (AS) goals in this peace, so he lived among them in exile. He repeatedly tried to explain to his companions and followers why he had made this peace.

In a sermon delivered by Imam Hassan (AS) after the conclusion of the peace treaty, he said in response to those who criticized him for this, “I focused on the welfare of the Ummah and ending the sedition. You pledged allegiance to me on the condition that you make peace with those who made peace with me and fight those who fought me, so I decided to make peace with Muawiyah and end the war between me and him.”

If Imam Hassan (AS) had the equipment, men, their sincerity, and their steadfastness in war, he could have confronted Muawiyah and defeated him. But divine wisdom required that he live during the time of betrayal by his companions and followers. Divine wisdom required that his time be a time of preparation and laying the groundwork for the uprising of his brother Imam Hussein (AS) in a revolution that history has immortalized, in which Imam Hussein (AS), his companions and his family were martyred.

Without the foundation laid by Imam Hassan (AS), that revolution would not have come to fruition. The blessings of the victory of the Husseini Revolution and its immortality in history, even to this day, are owed to the patience of Imam Hassan (AS), his sacrifices and self-sacrifices, and then the unparalleled martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) in history.

However, a group of people were not convinced by what Imam Hassan (AS) did, so he left his community and went to his grandfather’s city (Medina) and remained there until his martyrdom.

Imam Hassan (AS) was distinguished for his vast knowledge and scholarship. He was the grandson of the Messenger of God (PBUH) and was from the lineage of the pure Imams who transmitted abundant knowledge to others.

One day, Muawiyah tried to test the Imam’s (AS) knowledge and his awareness of the unseen that was hidden from the common people, and according to the narrations, Muawiyah actually wanted to test his knowledge because he had doubts about the Prophet (PBUH) and his family.

Imam Sadiq (AS) said in this regard, “When Hassan ibn Ali (AS) made peace with Muawiyah, they sat in the palm grove. Muawiyah said: O Abu Muhammad, I heard that the Messenger of God (PBUH) used to estimate the palm trees. Do you have any knowledge of this matter? Your followers claim that nothing in the earth or the sky is hidden from you? Imam Hassan (AS) said: The Messenger of God (PBUH) used to estimate the size and I will estimate their number (for you). Muawiyah said: How many dates are there in this palm tree? Imam Hassan (AS) said: Four thousand and four dates! So Muawiyah ordered them to be picked and counted, and they reached four thousand and three dates! He said: By God, I have not lied.”
