IQNA – Egypt has launched the country’s largest televised competition to identify emerging Quran recitation talent.

Egypt Launches Nationwide TV Contest to Discover Talented Qaris

The initiative—run by Awqaf Ministry in partnership with media services company United—aims to discover and support outstanding reciters, according to Sada El-Balad.

The ministry said the collaboration with United follows months of coordination. The company has been tasked with handling the technical aspects of the program, which will be broadcast on its satellite networks under the supervision of the ministry.

In June, Osama Al-Azhari, Egypt’s Minister of Endowments, met with Ahmed Fayek, head of programs at United, to finalize the details. “A unified approach was agreed upon to present the contest in the best possible way,” the ministry said.

The program, structured as a competition, seeks to introduce a new generation of prominent Egyptian reciters who follow the tradition of masters such as Abdul Basit, Al-Minshawi, and Mustafa Ismail. It also emphasizes supporting young talent to bolster Egypt’s regional and international role in promoting the Quran.

Committees of scholars and experts will oversee the competition. Participants will be evaluated based on clear criteria, including voice quality and correct recitation.

The contest is open to all age groups, including imams and those known for their recitation skills. Conditions for entry include mastery of Tajweed rules, choosing a style of recitation, independence from state-approved reciters, and not having official recognition as a Quran reciter by the Awqaf Ministry.

The provincial preliminaries began on Saturday, August 16, 2025, and will continue until September 3. A total of 4,708 participants have registered. Central preliminaries will follow from September 6 to 11 at the International Endowments Academy, with 300 contestants taking part.

On September 25, 28 finalists will receive training on performing in front of cameras. The final stage of the competition will take place in October 2025.
