IQNA – The Moroccan Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs announced intensified monitoring of Maktabs (traditional Quranic schools) in the country with the aim of determining the status of unofficial Maktabs.

The ministry sent notices to the authorities supervising Maktabs that operate outside the framework of the directive issued by the ministry, asking them to legalize their status and activities within a maximum of one month from the date of receipt of the notice, otherwise the necessary legal and supervisory measures will be taken in this regard, madar21.com reported.

In a written response to a question on “determining the status of informal Maktabs” submitted by Idriss Santissi, a member of the country’s parliament, Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ahmed El-Tawfiq stated that the ministry has issued a directive aimed at developing mechanisms for the management and supervision of Maktabs.

It has assigned the Islamic Affairs Boards the task of granting licenses to open these schools, provided that the licenses are approved by the central authorities, he stated.

Al-Tawfiq explained that the directive emphasizes taking measures to support the revival of traditional Quranic schools, including providing educational equipment for male and female Quran teachers and holding training courses for them in Maktabs and traditional educational institutions.

These measures, which have been taken to support the development of this sector, include strengthening the structural and educational framework of Maktabs, improving the professional skills of Quran teachers, encouraging the strengthening of educational structures through the Mohammed VI Award for Quranic Schools, and supporting educational research in this field, he added.

Al-Tawfiq also emphasized that his ministry, considering the educational role of Maktabs and the position of these centers in teaching the basics of reciting and memorizing the Quran to young people, attaches great importance to these schools and supervises their educational activities.
