IQNA – The continued inability of critics to produce anything comparable to the Quran is itself proof of its miraculous nature, says a university professor adding that even hostile viewpoints have deepened scholarly engagement with the holy text.

Hostile Views Themselves Prove the Quran’s Miracle, Scholar Says

Laleh Eftekhari, professor at Islamic Azad University, made the remarks at a virtual seminar on Tuesday titled “The Language of the Quran’s Miracle: A Review of Bassam Saeh’s Book.”

Eftekhari said that from the 11th to the mid-20th century, Orientalists, “knowingly or unknowingly, expressed hostile views and imposed their interpretations.” Yet, she added, “their contribution was that they compelled us to defend the Quran, to study, to write, and to better appreciate its beauty.”

She continued, “The expression of hostile views is itself evidence of the Quran’s miracle, because the enemies of the Quran have not been able to produce anything like it. This has also opened new grounds for deeper research.”

Eftekhari rejected claims that the Quran’s language was Syriac, calling such arguments “unsubstantiated.” Quoting from the Quran, she said, “We sent no messenger except in the language of his people, so that he might clearly convey God’s message [14:4].”

She added, “Despite fourteen centuries passing, no one has been able to present a scientifically or rationally valid argument against the Quran.”

According to her, “The language of the Quran is the language of its people. Translation helps those who were not the initial audience to understand it.”

She described the Quran’s challenge (tahaddi) as universal, noting that unlike other divine scriptures, “God guaranteed the Quran’s preservation, making it an eternal miracle.”

Recalling an early Islamic account, she said a group of Arab poets once tried to rival the Quran. “They sent Walid to meet the Prophet, but when he returned, he said: ‘This is a speech that surpasses all others; it is not the word of a human being.’”

Eftekhari highlighted the Quran’s eloquence and linguistic precision as enduring proofs of its uniqueness. “Its repetition of oaths at the beginning of verses attracts attention; its rhythm and melody are unmatched; not a single word can be replaced,” she said.

She added that other aspects of the Quran’s miracle include its predictions of future events and its scientific insights. “The Quran described the stages of human embryonic development 1,400 years ago, when no scientific tools like ultrasound existed,” she said. “It is a scientific miracle in many dimensions, allowing each person to benefit from it according to their capacity.”

Eftekhari noted that understanding the layered nature of the Quran’s language requires interdisciplinary research combining Quranic studies with modern sciences.

“We are not responsible for guiding others,” she said, “but we are responsible for conveying the truth so that people do not go astray. The Quran is the best source for this mission.”

She emphasized, “The more science advances, the clearer the truth and miracle of the Quran will become. The Quran’s challenge remains alive throughout all times and places.”
