Al-Azhar Translation Project Aims to Spread Quran’s Message
Titled “Translation of 1,000 Books”, the project includes selecting and translating top scholarly and literary books of Al-Azhar from Arabic into other languages.
According to Khaled Abbas, the dead of the faculty, it is a national initiative to convey the messages of the Quran and Islam to the world in different languages.
He said Al-Azhar has prominent scholars and experts in Islamic sciences as well as literature, philosophy and other scholarly fields.
He added that many people in the world are unaware of the scholarly publications of the university and that is why the project was launched to present these works to people in various languages.
For this reason, he noted, a committee comprising Al-Azhar president and deans of the university’s faculties was established to select works for translation, he stated.
Abbas said the university plans to launch a printing house for the publication of the translated books in the future.
Cooperation has been established with the Al-Azhar Translation Center and Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta in this project, he went on to say, noting that Dar al-Ifta is the channel for contacts with more than 200 foreign centers.
He said PDF copies of the translated books are sent free of charge to the foreign centers.
The dean of the faculty of languages of Al-Azhar, also referred to the activities of the English, German, French, Chinese and Spanish departments at the faculty and said there is also an Islamic studies department offering lessons in English, French, Urdu, and Chinese.
The faculty has cooperated with the Al-Azhar Translation Center in translating the Quran into German and Spanish among others, he said.

As for the prospects of AI replacing translators, he said while there may be no need for interpreters in conference and seminars in the future, the role of translators in translating texts, especially religious, legal and literary texts, will remain indispensable.
